 Seems So Long Ago, Nancy

  Tribute to Ray

John Bergeron presented his critically acclaimed Leonard Cohen tribute CD In the House of Mystery at the New York 2004 Leonard Cohen Event. Bergeron, who performed on Friday evening, June 11, was among many fans and friends who gathered to honor Leonard Cohen's life, poetry, music, art and writings.

"I was so overwhelmed with the weekend. I wanted to meet and talk with everyone. I'm not sure if I've ever felt that way about a gathering before. It went too quickly," John said.

In the House of Mystery, John's vision of Leonard Cohen and his music, contains 11 cover versions of Cohen's best songs to date. In addition, Bergeron recently released "In the House of Mystery - Unplugged."

"Recording In the House of Mystery was all about seeing these images of Leonard Cohen’s story inside his lyrics and hearing back the result of how it makes me feel. My performance of Cohen’s music seems to come so naturally to me that it is mysteriously effortless. I know I really enjoy where it takes me," John said.

"Upon conceiving the Unplugged version of In the House of Mystery, I knew I wanted it to be simple, uncluttered and much more personal than the original. I wanted the freedom to explore where the stories would take me," he continued..

But at the New York event, John found another performer also weighing on his mind. A day before John performed came the news that one of his mentors - the great Ray Charles - had passed away.

"When we were at the poetry reading I wanted to perform a tribute to Ray Charles because it had been on my mind.  I had performed earlier but thought I'd come back to it," John said. "When Natalie thanked us all after Suzanne's closing set, I knew my window of opportunity had slipped by but it wasn't long before I knew I could record this when I got home and to my studio."

"Although the emotion in this piece is focused toward Ray & what he meant to us all it comes from the emotion of the weekend & all who gathered there.  Maybe that's why it is so chatty.  Maybe I just have a lot to say about both subjects."

John's Tribute to Ray is available for download in mp3 format.

"Please pass this Conversation on Piano, Tribute to Ray, on to all you think might enjoy  it," John said.
